A wealthy Frankfort teen who pleaded guilty last year to reckless driving after running a stop sign and smashing into a retired Downers Grove couple sought permission Monday to attend the Grammy Awards even though the injured couple have yet to receive his court-ordered apology letters.

I need to note this kid's name, so when he becomes a doctor, I can ensure that I never, ever go to him.
This kind of thing, this lack of human connectivity in young people, terrifies me.
- 6 votes
This really give new meaning to spoiled teenager. Apparently he has been upheld and enabled, instead of lead in the right direction of responsibility.
- 4 votes
You said it!
But what causes this? I see this kind of behavior in young people all the time, to varying degrees. A sense of entitlement, a disconnect from what's right and what's wrong. It can't be just bad parenting.
Logic tells me that our digital age, in which kids (and adults) communicate less on a face-to-face basis and more via digital means (texting, facebook, etc.) would help to create this disconnect.
It's worth some research. I think I've got a topic for an article on my hands.
- 4 votes
Yes, I agree the disconnect may be aided by the digital age. I see it with my own teen. I have to remind him to put down the Iphone sometimes. I did not see my other two grown kids be that absorbed, because these things like Xbox, Iphone, etc were not around. Ok the original Nintendo had come out, but they still got out and rode bikes or something.
This young man in this article obviously has money and lots of it. When you hand over the keys to a Ferreri to someone that young, it may be the sense of entitlement. Sure we all want to give our kids nice things, but hey lets teach them the art of earning it first so they will gain something of value, like responsibility.
Yes, do an article. I think a lot of good parent's that are perplexed by today's young people's attitudes, would find out they are not the only parent's going through this. Finding out the causes would certainly be worth the effort.

Viki, I think the digital concept makes perfect sense. Throw in the music videos(ala MTV), the x-box as a babysitter and the"obsessive texting", you have a recipe that at worst, creates a socio-path, at best,a self centered, spoiled rotten brat that would walk right past someone suffering a heart attack on the street. I never fail to be amazed at the disconnect in the young. I will add that not all youth is like this. There are some well raised, responsible and caring young people out there. :)

True, it's not everyone (if it were, I'd be running for the hills with stockpiles of ammunition and canned goods!). I have two teens myself and they're good kids.
I wonder if, ten years from now, we'll realize that we've got a huge socio-pathic population, and that we helped create it. Or are we powerless to stop it?

I will add that not all youth is like this.
True! But when they hit adolescence, and puberty, it's a struggle. I tell my soon to be 16 yr. old, we went in this together, we will come out of this together. I can see the frustrastion in him. He is trying to struggle with making his own decisions without Mom and Dad's help, but worries if it is the right decision. His first vehicle this summer will be along the lines of an old worn out farm truck, not a Ferreri.
Vicki, I do believe we helped create it in some ways. To me it's a fine line on that. There are many kids that their parent's cannot afford Iphones for their kids, and these kids feel left out of the circle that is important to them. Those that do get phones, or the lastest new shoe, or hollister sweat jackets feel like they have confidence, because they are a part of everything. It's a hard choice to make.

I wonder if, ten years from now, we'll realize that we've got a huge socio-pathic population, and that we helped create it. Or are we powerless to stop it? Viki, that's a very good question. It is for sure that many walking the streets are "socio-pathic zombies" with tunnel vision toward seeking out their next "form of gratification". It is nice to hear that you have two "good kids". :) I see some good ones every now and then myself. It is refreshing when I have a "sighting". LOL I really think the whole thing is a "run away train". Corporate America is a powerful entity and will go to any length to keep the stranglehold on the public, both young and old.

Ain't that the truth.
Lots to ponder. But I may stock up on ammunition and canned goods just in case there is an impending sociopathic zombie invasion.
- 4 votes
......just in case there is an impending sociapathic zombie invasion.
I think its already occurred. No kidding. Not just the kids either. Anywhere you go now you see a cell in someones hand, or a laptop bag on the shoulder. It's like it has become a body attachment. No kidding, I have been observing at my son's basketball games, (I am guilty also) that everyone in the bleachers is playing games, or texting during halftime. I thought wow times have sure changed. Now this is the topper here. My husband and I will go fishing on the lake bank. My husband props his pole up against a tree stump, with the line in the water, then sits in his lawn chair and plays games on his phone. I tease him badly about that. lol.

Snort, Snort!!! :) I'll meet you in the hills. LOL Don't forget the "fruit cake". You could break the seal on that(after a nuclear explosion) and it will be intact and just as edible(although I always thought it tasted disgusting). :) sociopathic zombie invasion. Did we just coin a new phrase?? :^) If so, I'll start the copyright paperwork, you have a check in I'd say, ohhhh, about 4 weeks. LOL

Lol Defense Counsel, a new phrase has indeed been coined. It is a perfect description too.
- 3 votes
It'll definitely be the title of an article I'm about to write on this subject! ;)
It's not just kids, you're right mon glas. I see it too at my son's sporting events, at the mall. My daughter and I visited the Harry Potter extravaganza at Universal Studios in Orlando after Christmas, and we giggled at an entire family of 6, all plugged in to their iPhones with headphones, standing in line, completely ignoring each other, while my daughter and I (though occasionally using our phones to post to Facebook or text with friends) chatted with the people around us and with each other.
- 3 votes
I will look forward to your article. I think your seeing the family completely ignoring each other says it all. There are certainly pro's and con's to this new generation of social media.
I would be interested to know how the couple that was injured in the accident felt about the attitude of this young man. Do you think they also view him as spoiled with entitlement?

From the article:
For the Ryans, the requests and unsent apology letters are more examples of Sayeed's lack of remorse. "I'm more than a little annoyed by it," said Marybeth, who has had several surgeries and will have another later this month to replace her knee. "I would like to see him accept some responsibility for it so he won't do it again. We were really, really lucky that we survived it."
- 4 votes
They are very lucky to have survived. It is also sad to see that Sayeed would not have gone to them, or written to them on his own without being told to do so by a court order. The fact he was told by a Judge to do that and still did not comply says volumes about his character. I would find it meaningless for him to do so at this point.

I can't imagine he'll get into med school anywhere in the States if they do a simple Google news search. Can you imagine someone with so little compassion being a doctor?
- 4 votes
I agree Viki, but it seems they have "bottomless pockets", and the way the medical field has gone of late, "money" is good??
- 4 votes
That's true. Not just the medical field, but the whole higher education field. I teach college. Enrollment numbers are dropping all over the place.
- 5 votes
I certainly hope he doesn't get into a med school. I hate to wish that on someone. Perhaps he needs to be really held accountable for his bad decisions by suffering the consequences. Look at it this way. People are now being held back from jobs, bank accounts, etc, just because of a low credit score. Surely something like this would have an impact.
I agree with Defense Counsel though. Money has become the deciding factor now-days.

Maybe they should make the kid give the victims family free health care(with a malpractice attorney present at all times)for the rest of his life?I can hear it now........"go ahead doc...do you feel lucky ,punk?"...

Sorry Viki, this became an afternoon of much needed humor and my friend mstanley and I were talking about the wolf and full moon. Actually, I think the "sociopathic zombie invasion" had something to do with as well!! :) Thanks for accepting the FR. :)

I and my sisters have already placed a curse on you and your ulisi so that you will NEVER be able to escape the hold that I ahve on you. You will always be within my powerful grasp.
Viki, I hope you will forgive me and my derailing of your article this afternoon.

Derailing forgiven. Y'all are funny, and I definitely needed the funny diversion this afternoon! Thanks to all for the friend requests!

Thanks Viki. I was due for a little childish humor session. Work is a mess and most of my Vine stuff deals with very serious subjects. It was fun to giggle and get those good chemicals running through the mind. I checked you out a bit and I'm very impressed and honored to become friends. Talk to you soon Viki!! :)

Thanks, DC! The honor is mine. You're my first new Newsvine friend in a long while, and the first upon my return from a lengthy hiatus. Feels like a new day.

Viki, thank you for accepting my friend request, and for forgiving my derailing. Pleasure to meet you, btw.
